Elon Musk Net Worth: 2,738 Years of Spending $1 Million a Day

If Elon Musk spent $1 million every single day, it would take 2,738 years to burn through $1 trillion. A viral post made that point this week, and the math holds up: $1 trillion divided by $1 million is a million days, which is about 2,738 years. Musk now sits just above that line, with Benzinga and other outlets putting his fortune at roughly $1.04 trillion after SpaceX shares jumped. We covered the jump in Elon Musk Is a Trillionaire Again.

How big is a million days?

It is hard to picture, so try this. Someone who lived 80 years and spent $1 million every day from birth would get through about $29 billion. That is less than 3% of Musk’s fortune.

Another way to see it: by one tally from MoneyLion, buying every team in the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL would cost about $537 billion in total. That is roughly half of $1 trillion. The same piece notes that NASA’s budget of about $25 billion a year could be funded for 40 years.

Why he can’t really spend it

Almost none of this is cash. It is mostly shares in SpaceX and Tesla, valued at today’s market price. Selling a big chunk to fund a spending spree would push those prices down, and that would shrink the fortune that made the spree possible. That is why we keep calling it paper wealth, not a bank balance.

Our take: the $1 million a day idea is a fun way to show scale, but the better number is how fast the fortune moves on its own. When Musk’s wealth jumped about $61 billion in a single day, as Forbes reported on October 2, that was the equivalent of 61,000 days of $1 million spending, or about 167 years, gained in 24 hours. The same swings can run the other way. His fortune was below $700 billion in July, so the 2,738-year headline is only as solid as SpaceX and Tesla share prices.
