Six days after Shivon Zilis said Elon Musk ended their relationship “with no warning,” there is still no reported reason why. Musk has not publicly addressed the split, and Zilis has not explained it either. As of October 8, nearly everything on the public record comes from her own posts and screenshots.
The timeline so far
On Thursday, September 24, Musk attended the White House state dinner for Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The Daily Beast reports he went without a date. In screenshots Zilis later shared, Musk wrote that he “didn’t realize that this Xi dinner included significant other” or he would have invited her. She replied that it meant a lot to her.
The same day, according to Hello, Zilis texted that it was “wonderful” to see him for breakfast and that she loved him “very much.” Musk answered, “Love you too.”
Three days later, on September 27, Zilis posted “New day, new life,” the Daily Beast says. On October 2 came her long post on X, in which she wrote it was “hard to go from in love to let go in a week with no warning, but that’s just how it is sometimes.” It followed a screenshot circulating online that showed Musk had unfollowed her, as Forbes reported. Our earlier report covers the original post.
What is still unknown
No major outlet has reported a reason. A Musk representative did not immediately respond to the Daily Beast’s request for comment, and Zilis’s account has not been confirmed by him.
Our take: the timeline is what made this spread, with warm texts on September 24 and a public post eight days later. But a timeline is not a reason. Nearly every public detail so far comes from Zilis herself, Musk has said nothing, and the two share four children. Until one of them explains, anything beyond the dates is guesswork, and we are not going to add to it.
