Amazon Blocks Musk’s Grok Bot and He Floats an Amazon Rival

Users say Amazon has started blocking Grok Bot, the AI shopping agent from Elon Musk’s AI company, and Musk replied on Thursday, October 15, “Maybe we should start a competitor to Amazon.” One user posted an error message saying continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use. We have not seen a statement from Amazon about Grok Bot.

What Musk said

Musk had been promoting Grok Bot as a way to shop. On Saturday, October 10, a user said Amazon was blocking the agent, and Musk answered that Grok “will find another way to buy stuff.” After the new error message appeared, he wrote, “There are far more purchasing websites than just Amazon!” The line about a competitor came after a user suggested an “X Shop.” Musk has not said he will build one.

Why Amazon may be blocking agents

We have not seen Amazon explain its reasons for Grok Bot. The error text reads like the message Amazon is said to have shown in September when it blocked Meta’s Muse shopping agent. Accounts of that case say Amazon’s concerns include unauthorized account access, a worse customer experience and not being able to tell whether a bot is acting openly for a real shopper.

The pledge and the fine print

On the same day, Musk wrote that SpaceX will “make you whole” if Grok Bot makes a purchase mistake or leaks card details, adding that this has “never happened yet.” That is a post on X, not a published policy. Grok Bot’s terms, last updated October 12, say the company is not responsible for “Agentic Actions” and that financial transactions need human review. We covered the card-photo pitch in Musk Says Grok Bot Can Order for You From a Photo of Your Card and the price of the plan that includes it in SpaceXSI Bundles Grok, Cursor and X Premium Into One Plan.

Our take: a rival to Amazon is a one-line post for now, with no details, and Amazon’s lead rests on warehouses, delivery and sellers that took years to build. The nearer question is smaller: if more big stores close their doors to AI agents, Grok Bot has fewer places to shop. Until the refund pledge is in writing, anyone sending card details to an agent should read the terms first.
