Musk Says Grok Bot Will Use Anthropic’s Claude and Midjourney

Elon Musk says Grok Bot, an AI agent app from his company, will use outside models such as Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney and Suno for some tasks. The Next Web reported the change on October 7, and Tesla North carries the text of Musk’s post.

What Musk said

In the post, Musk said SpaceX will use the best back end model for any given task, including Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney, Suno and other leading APIs. The Next Web quotes the closing line: “Whatever is most likely to give you the best outcome.” The Information reported the story first, according to a Techmeme headline.

Which product this is

This is Grok Bot, an agent app, and not the main Grok chatbot. The Next Web says Grok Bot launched in August. It also says the change came a day after users reported trouble reaching Grok, and notes that no cause was given.

What is not known

The reports we read include no statement from Anthropic, Midjourney or Suno. They do not say which tasks go to which model, or whether any business deal sits behind the change. Dates differ slightly: The Information places the post on Tuesday night, October 6, while The Next Web dates its report October 7.

Our take: it is unusual for an AI company to route work to rival models, and Musk frames it as picking the best tool for the job. Days later he praised an Anthropic policy, which we covered in Musk Backs Anthropic’s New Rule Against Cruelty to Claude. Because the story rests on his own post and a few tech outlets, details may change.
