SpaceXAI Is Becoming SpaceXSI: Why Musk Dropped “AI”

Elon Musk says SpaceX’s AI unit is about to lose the “AI” in its name. SpaceXAI will become SpaceXSI, short for super intelligence. Musk confirmed the change on X on Sunday, October 4, when a user asked if it was coming and he replied, “Yes, we will make that change.”

He added “No more AI. SI. It’s better,” and described SpaceX as a super intelligence company. The unit builds the Grok chatbot, which runs inside X, a platform with around 117 million monthly users. Grok is also used in U.S. government and military work under a $200 million agreement from July 2025.

Where the name comes from

The new wording follows the White House. President Trump has told federal agencies to say “super intelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence” in official communications, arguing that “artificial” makes the technology sound fake. Mark Zuckerberg has also started using the term, though Meta AI has not been renamed.

A third name for the same unit

SpaceX bought xAI in February in an all-stock deal valued at $250 billion. In July, xAI became SpaceXAI. SpaceXSI would be its third name, and when the reports came out the company had not yet changed its website or official channels.

Our take: this is a branding change, not a technical one. Grok is the same product, built by the same team, and a new label does not make a model smarter. “Super intelligence” also has no agreed definition in the industry, so the name is a promise, not a measurement. The real test is whether a future model earns it, and whether the Grok name itself survives the change.

SpaceX is also the biggest piece of Musk’s fortune, as we explained in our trillionaire story, so what the company calls itself gets more attention than a rename normally would.
