Tesla has passed 1,000 Model Y sales in India since it began selling cars there, according to Autocar India. Using the government’s Vahan vehicle portal, its report on October 5 counts 1,017 Model Y deliveries from September 2025 to October 2, 2026.
A record month, from a small base
Autocar India says September 2026 was Tesla’s best month in India, with 291 sales. That is about 0.8% of the 35,995 electric passenger cars sold in the country that month. In the luxury electric segment, it puts Tesla second, behind BMW with 502 and ahead of Mercedes with 125, and says Tesla holds 30% of that segment. Electrek counts registrations rather than deliveries, using data through September. It puts the total at 993 and says Tesla’s first year came in under 1,000 cars.
Prices and rules
Autocar India says the Model Y Premium rear-wheel-drive starts at Rs 50.89 lakh, after a Rs 9 lakh price cut in May. A lakh is 100,000 rupees, so that is about 5.09 million rupees. Autocar India counts six Tesla showrooms there, in Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai, and 20 Superchargers, the report says. Electrek says the longer Model Y L, launched in April at Rs 61.99 lakh, made up 81% of September, and that import duty can reach 110%.
Our take: this is early progress, not a breakthrough. Tesla sells imported cars in a market where duties are heavy, and a record month still amounts to under 300 cars. The counts also differ between outlets, and neither is a Tesla figure.
