Grimes Says She Kept Elon Musk Out of Her New Album Psy Opera

Grimes says she kept Elon Musk out of the first part of her new album, Psy Opera, and that she wanted none of it to be about him. She said it on a podcast on Sunday, October 11, two days after she released the lead single, “Accelerando.” No release date has been set for either part of the album.

What she said

Grimes said she kept the first part focused on AI and technology and left Musk out of it: “I just didn’t want any of this to be about Elon.” Asked whether public attention to her private life made personal songwriting hard, she said the personal material “couldn’t come first.” She called the second part “100% personal, really,” and said she wished the two parts had been mixed together more. She also voiced some regret that the first part lacks emotion and the second lacks computer-related material.

About the album

Psy Opera is her first album since Miss Anthropocene in 2020 and the first on her own label, Nazgul Recording, after she left Columbia Records. The lead single came out on Friday, October 9, and we covered Musk’s reaction in Musk Congratulates Grimes as She Releases ‘Accelerando’.

Their history

Grimes and Musk made their public debut as a couple at the Met Gala in May 2018, and the two share three children. In September 2021 Musk called them “semi-separated,” and she later said they had broken up again.

Our take: Grimes is drawing a line around the public side of the album, and she is not saying the personal half is about Musk either. She has said only that the second part is personal. Until a release date and track list arrive, nothing more can be said about who or what it covers.
