Musk Has Given $276 Million to Republicans for the Midterms

Elon Musk has given more than $276 million since July to help Republicans hold their majorities in Congress. That makes him the biggest known donor of the 2026 midterms so far, and his own super PAC has confirmed the total. The money shows where Musk wants his influence to count this fall, and it is a sharp turn from what he said he would do last year.

Where the money went

Three gifts make up most of the total. The largest, $158 million, went to the Senate Leadership Fund, the main super PAC that backs Republican Senate candidates. Another $76 million went to America PAC, the super PAC Musk set up himself, which is running a door-knocking turnout effort like the one it ran in 2024. A further $10 million went to Lone Star Liberty PAC, which supports Ken Paxton, the Republican Senate nominee in Texas.

Those three gifts add up to $244 million. That leaves roughly $32 million of the $276 million that we cannot place. Nothing we have seen says where it went, so we are not going to guess.

What each side says

America PAC spokesperson Andrew Romeo says the spending gives Republicans “a fighting chance to defy history.” The party of a sitting president has usually lost seats in midterm elections, which is presumably the history he means. On the other side, Lauren French of Senate Majority PAC, the Democratic counterpart, accuses Republicans of trying to buy the elections.

A change of tone

In May 2025, Musk said he planned to cut back on political spending and had “done enough.” He has kept a lower profile this cycle than he did in 2024, and he and President Donald Trump have patched things up after a falling out. The size of the new giving shows that a quieter Musk is not a Musk who has stopped writing checks.

What to watch

The next round of campaign finance disclosures should show where more of this money has gone, including the roughly $32 million we cannot place, and how much of the Senate Leadership Fund’s share has been spent on specific races. Those numbers will tell us whether the money is moving the map or just piling up.

Our take: these numbers measure different things. Days ago we reported that America PAC has spent about $40 million on independent expenditures this cycle, based on FEC filings. That is money the group has already put to work. The $276 million is money Musk has given to groups, and more than half of it went to the Senate Leadership Fund, which spends on its own. So the giving figure shows how much he has put in, and the spending figure shows how much has been used so far. Keep both in mind when you see them side by side.
